Rapportive is the type of tool you don't need. That is until you install it and then you realize how handy it is. 
It is a simple free plugin for gmail that replaces the Ad sidebar with useful social information derived from who ever emails you or whatever email address you happen to be hovering over.

This is another useful tool that you don't realize you need until you use it. Tired of forgetting to follow up on things? Fixing this is as easy as adding a cc or bcc field to your emails. The service will let you know when things need attention.
